Women in Surveying and Spatial Science WA is proud to celebrate the growing presence, achievements, and leadership of women across our industry. As a community, we continue to champion visibility, connection, and opportunity—and last month Surveyors Australia's Inaugural National Awards provided a a brilliant example of why this work matters.

Our Chairperson Kelly Maloney (Director and Business Manager at CK Maloney Surveying) and our Events Management Coordinator Angelique Cooper (Surveyors Australia National Engagement and Partnerships Lead) were honoured to attend the National EISSI Awards in Canberra last month. The event brought together leaders, emerging professionals, and innovators from across the country to recognise excellence in surveying and spatial science.

A particular highlight for Western Australia was the outstanding achievement of Zoe Hafenscher, who was awarded the National Vocational Student of the Year. This recognition not only celebrates Zoe’s dedication and talent but also highlights the strength of emerging professionals within our state. It was a proud moment for WA, and a reminder of the importance of nurturing and supporting the next generation.

The Importance of Women in Industry

Representation matters—particularly in industries historically dominated by men. Surveying and spatial sciences have long been perceived as traditional, male-centric career paths, but that narrative is steadily shifting. Women are not only entering the profession in greater numbers; they are excelling, leading, and reshaping the future of the industry.

The presence of women at events such as the National EISSI Awards is vital. It sends a clear message: women belong here, their contributions are valued, and their achievements deserve recognition. Visibility at these national platforms helps inspire others to pursue careers in the field and reinforces the idea that there is space for everyone to succeed.

Women bring diverse perspectives, approaches to problem-solving, and leadership styles that strengthen our profession. From technical expertise in the field to strategic leadership in organisations, women continue to demonstrate their capability across all aspects of surveying and spatial science.

Carving Career Pathways in a Changing Industry

For many women, building a career in a traditionally male-dominated industry can come with unique challenges. However, it is also an opportunity—an opportunity to shape new pathways, challenge outdated norms, and create more inclusive workplaces for those who follow.

Today, women in surveying and spatial science are forging dynamic careers across a wide range of roles—from field surveying and geospatial analysis to project management, research, and executive leadership. Their success is driven by resilience, skill, and a growing support network that is committed to lifting each other up.

Our role in WA

Women in Surveying and Spatial Science WA exists to support this momentum. We provide a platform for women to connect, share experiences, and grow professionally. Through networking events, mentorship opportunities, and industry engagement, the group fosters a sense of community that empowers women at every stage of their careers.

Whether you are just starting out, transitioning into the industry, or an experienced professional, the group offers a welcoming and supportive environment to learn, collaborate, and thrive.

Celebrating and Supporting Each Other

We encourage our community to celebrate Zoe Hafenscher’s achievement—if you see her at upcoming events, take the opportunity to congratulate her and share in her success. These moments of recognition are powerful, and they help build a culture where achievements are acknowledged and celebrated openly.

Together, we can continue to amplify the voices of women in surveying and spatial science, support one another’s journeys, and inspire the next generation of professionals. We look forward to welcoming you at our next event!
