From Growth to Influence: The Evolving Story of Women in Surveying & Spatial Sciences WA

On July 3rd 2026, our Chairperson, Kelly Maloney, had the privilege of presenting at the Western Australian Institution of Surveyors (WAIS) Conference on behalf of Women in Surveying & Spatial Sciences WA.

The presentation provided an opportunity to share not only the story of our organisation and the significant growth we have experienced in recent years, but also our vision for the future of the surveying and spatial sciences profession.

As our industry continues to evolve, so too does the importance of creating workplaces and professional networks that are inclusive, supportive, and representative of the diverse communities we serve. We spoke about the role Women in Surveying & Spatial Sciences WA is playing in helping to shape that future through advocacy, connection, leadership development, mentoring, and creating opportunities for meaningful engagement across all stages of a person's career.

A key message of the presentation was that diversity and inclusion are not simply initiatives to be supported—they are essential drivers of innovation, collaboration, workforce sustainability, and industry growth. Building a stronger profession requires attracting and retaining talented people from all backgrounds and ensuring they have opportunities to thrive.

We also shared our strategic focus areas, including:

It was particularly rewarding to reflect on how far our organisation has come and to see the increasing support from individuals, organisations, and industry leaders who recognise the value that diverse perspectives bring to our profession.

The conversation reinforced that creating a more inclusive industry is a shared responsibility and one that benefits everyone. While our focus remains on supporting and empowering women in surveying and spatial sciences, our events and initiatives are open to all who are committed to building a stronger, more connected, and more representative profession.
