Women in Surveying and Spatial Science WA Committee Members Alice Nicolaescu and Ivana Ivanova proudly represented the profession at the Perth Careers Expo held this week at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, volunteering their time along with other industry members and academics to engage with students, parents, and educators.

The surveying careers stand was delivered through a strong collaboration between the Western Australian Institute of Surveyors and Curtin University’s Spatial Sciences program. Together, they highlighted the breadth of career opportunities available within the surveying and spatial sciences industry, as well as the diverse educational and training pathways that can lead students into this dynamic field.
"I didn't know about this as a career"
Throughout the event, Alice and Ivana spoke with hundreds of attendees, offering valuable insights into a profession that is often misunderstood or overlooked. From land development and infrastructure projects to environmental management and cutting-edge geospatial technologies, they showcased how surveying and spatial science plays a fundamental role in shaping the world around us. Visitors to the stand gained a clearer understanding of how the industry underpins the planning, design, and construction of the built environment, while also contributing to sustainability and emerging digital solutions.

Careers expos such as this provide a vital platform for direct engagement with the next generation. They allow industry professionals to demystify their work, challenge outdated perceptions, and demonstrate the real-world impact and relevance of their roles. For many students and parents, these conversations can be the first introduction to surveying and spatial science as a viable and rewarding career choice.
A particularly important aspect of Alice and Ivana’s involvement was their engagement with young women considering future study and career options. As passionate advocates for diversity and inclusion, they took the opportunity to speak about the evolving landscape of the profession and the growing opportunities for women in what has historically been a male-dominated industry.

By sharing their own career journeys and experiences, they encouraged female students to explore pathways in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), reinforcing that the industry is becoming increasingly inclusive, innovative, and forward-looking.
Their presence at the expo served as a powerful example of representation, helping to break down barriers and inspire confidence in young women who may not have previously considered a career in surveying or spatial science. Common questions from students included “What does a day look like for a surveyor” and “What are the ATAR prerequisites”
The conversations held throughout the expo also reflected broader industry efforts to address skills shortages and build a more diverse workforce. Engaging with students early, providing clear pathways into study, and promoting inclusive role models are all key steps in ensuring the continued growth and sustainability of the profession.
"This is interesting! Look at all the technology!"
Events like the Perth Careers Expo simply wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of volunteers across the duration of the event. A sincere thank you goes to all those who generously gave their time to promote the surveying and spatial sciences industry, share their experiences, and inspire future talent. Their enthusiasm and commitment play an essential role in strengthening awareness and interest in the profession.
A special acknowledgement must also be given to the West Australian Institute of Surveyors and Curtin University for their continued partnership and support in creating these valuable opportunities. Their collaboration not only enables meaningful engagement with the community but also ensures that students are aware of the education pathways and exciting career prospects available within the industry.

Alice and Ivana’s contribution to the Perth Careers Expo highlights the importance of industry involvement in outreach and education initiatives. By volunteering their time and expertise, they not only promoted career opportunities but also helped shape perceptions and inspire the next generation of professionals.
As the surveying and spatial sciences industry continues to evolve with advancements in technology and increasing demand for data-driven solutions, initiatives like the Perth Careers Expo play an essential role in connecting people with future opportunities—and ensuring that the workforce of tomorrow reflects the diversity and talent of the community it serves.
